Travel guide

Planning a Uttarakhand trip

Uttarakhand, often called Devbhoomi, the Land of the Gods, packs a remarkable range of experiences into one state. In a single week you can watch the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar, practise yoga by the river in Rishikesh, walk through cedar forests in Mussoorie and row across a lake in Nainital, with the snow peaks of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalaya on the horizon for much of the way.

The state divides naturally into two regions. Garhwal, in the west, is home to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Chopta and the Char Dham pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Kumaon, in the east, is gentler and greener, with Nainital, Bhimtal, Ranikhet and Jim Corbett National Park. Mountain roads are slow, so trying to cover both regions in a few days usually means more time in the car than out of it. Choosing one region, or linking them with a sensible route, makes for a far better trip. Garhwal is the easier region to reach from Delhi, via Dehradun's airport or the railway stations at Haridwar and Dehradun, while Kumaon is usually approached through the railhead at Kathgodam.

Rishikesh is where many travellers begin, and it's the reason we created our six-day Rishikesh package: yoga every morning, Ganga Aarti at the special ghats, waterfalls, a trek with a night of camping, and the hidden corners most visitors never find. Beyond Rishikesh, we plan family hill-station holidays, honeymoon stays with mountain views, winter snow trips to Auli and Chopta, and pilgrimage itineraries with comfortable halts along the way.

Every Uttarakhand plan we build accounts for road conditions, the season and your pace. We'll tell you honestly when a route is too ambitious, suggest the best viewpoints for sunrise, and keep the plan flexible for mountain weather, which can change quickly. Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we'll share a day-by-day itinerary.

Where to go

Top places to visit in Uttarakhand

  1. 01

    Rishikesh

The yoga capital of the world sits where the Ganga leaves the mountains. Come for riverside ashrams, the Beatles Ashram, Ram Jhula, white-water rafting and the evening aarti at Parmarth Niketan and Triveni Ghat.

  2. 02

    Haridwar

One of Hinduism's seven holiest cities. The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri at dusk, with hundreds of floating diyas, is unforgettable, and Haridwar is only about 25 km from Rishikesh.

  3. 03

    Mussoorie & Landour

The “Queen of the Hills” offers colonial-era charm along Mall Road, Kempty Falls and the Lal Tibba viewpoint, with quiet forest walks in Landour, the old cantonment town just above it.

  4. 04

    Nainital

Built around the pear-shaped Naini Lake in Kumaon, Nainital is ideal for families, with boating, the Snow View ropeway and nearby lakes at Bhimtal and Sattal.

  5. 05

    Auli & Chopta

For snow and big Himalayan views. Auli is Uttarakhand's ski destination in winter, while Chopta is the base for the Tungnath temple and the Chandrashila summit, with views of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhamba.

  6. 06

    Jim Corbett National Park

India's oldest national park, established in 1936, with a good chance of spotting tigers, elephants and deer on a jeep safari. Dhikala and Bijrani are the most popular zones.

  7. 07

    Char Dham

The pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The temples usually open around late April or May and close around Diwali, with exact dates announced each year.

When to go

Best time to visit Uttarakhand

March to June and September to November are the best months for most of Uttarakhand. Winter brings snow to Auli and Chopta, while the monsoon (July–August) can cause landslides on mountain roads.

  • Best time

    Spring & summer

    March – June

Pleasant in the hills and warm in Rishikesh. Ideal for hill stations, treks and the start of the Char Dham season. Rafting in Rishikesh usually runs until the end of June.

  • Monsoon

    July – August

Lush and green, but heavy rain can block mountain roads with landslides and rafting pauses. Best for flexible travellers staying close to Rishikesh and Dehradun.

  • Best time

    Autumn

    September – November

Clear skies and the sharpest Himalayan views of the year. Rafting reopens, and the weather is perfect for yoga, treks and sightseeing.

  • Winter

    December – February

Cold, with snowfall at Auli, Chopta and Mussoorie's higher points. Rishikesh stays mild during the day, which makes it a good winter yoga escape.

Uttarakhand travel FAQs

What is the best way to reach Rishikesh?

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (Dehradun), about 20 km or 40 minutes from Rishikesh. Haridwar and Rishikesh railway stations are well connected, and overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi. By road, Delhi to Rishikesh is around 240 km, usually 5–7 hours depending on traffic.

Mussoorie or Nainital: which is better for a family holiday?

Both are excellent. Mussoorie is closer to Delhi and Rishikesh and easy to combine with them, while Nainital has the lake, boating and a cluster of nearby lakes that keep children busy. We'll suggest one based on your starting city, dates and what your family enjoys.

When can I see snow in Uttarakhand?

Snowfall usually arrives between late December and February at Auli, Chopta, Dhanaulti and sometimes the higher parts of Mussoorie. Snow can't be guaranteed on specific dates, so we plan winter trips with a flexible day and keep an eye on the forecast.

Is river rafting in Rishikesh safe?

Rafting with a licensed operator is safe for most healthy adults and teenagers, with life jackets, helmets and trained guides. The season usually runs from September to June, and stretches are graded by difficulty, so beginners and families can choose an easier section.

Can you help plan a Char Dham Yatra?

Yes. We can plan Char Dham or Do Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath) itineraries with sensible driving days, comfortable halts and help with the mandatory online registration. Temple opening and closing dates are announced each year, so tell us your preferred month early.
