Planning a Mathura Vrindavan trip
Mathura and Vrindavan are the heart of Braj Bhoomi, the land of Lord Krishna's birth and childhood. Mathura, one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, is where Krishna was born; Vrindavan, about 12 km away, is where he spent his youth, and the town now holds thousands of temples, from tiny roadside shrines to grand marble complexes.
A visit here is less about sightseeing and more about atmosphere: the bells and kirtan at Banke Bihari temple, the evening aarti at Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, Prem Mandir glowing in changing colours after dark, and the 21 km Govardhan parikrama walked barefoot by devotees. Beyond the twin towns, the villages of Gokul, Barsana and Nandgaon each hold their own part of Krishna's story.
Darshan timings change with the season, and most temples close for a few hours in the afternoon, so a good plan makes a real difference. We arrange your days around aarti and darshan times, book comfortable stays close to the temples, and arrange local transport that can manage Vrindavan's narrow lanes. For elderly parents, we keep walking manageable and suggest the quieter hours at the busiest temples. Most travellers stay in Vrindavan, which keeps the main temples close by, and early mornings are usually the calmest time for darshan, with the evening aartis worth planning the rest of the day around.
Mathura is around three hours from Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway and about an hour from Agra, so it's easy to combine with the Taj Mahal or a weekend away from the capital. Festivals are the most magical and the busiest times to visit: Janmashtami in August or September, and the famous Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon in the days before Holi. Message us your dates and we'll plan a peaceful, well-paced Braj yatra for your family.

Where to go
Top places to visit in Mathura Vrindavan
- 01
Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura
The temple complex at the site revered as Krishna's birthplace. Security is strict: phones, bags and cameras usually have to be deposited outside, so plan to travel light.
- 02
Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan
Vrindavan's most beloved temple, where a curtain is drawn in front of the deity every few moments during darshan. It gets extremely crowded on weekends and festivals, so weekday mornings are best.
- 03
Prem Mandir
A white Italian-marble temple surrounded by gardens and sculptures of Krishna's leelas. Visit at dusk to see it lit in changing colours, followed by the musical fountain show.
- 04
ISKCON Vrindavan
The Krishna Balaram Mandir is calm and well organised, with melodious kirtan through the day and a popular prasadam restaurant, drawing devotees from around the world.
- 05
Vishram Ghat & the Yamuna
Mathura's main ghat, where Krishna is said to have rested after defeating Kansa. The evening Yamuna aarti and a boat ride along the ghats are highlights.
- 06
Govardhan Hill
Devotees walk the 21 km parikrama around Govardhan, the hill Krishna lifted to shelter the people of Braj. Walk it, or cover part of it by e-rickshaw, with stops at Radha Kund and Mansi Ganga.
- 07
Barsana, Nandgaon & Gokul
Barsana is Radha's village and home of the Lathmar Holi, Nandgaon is the village of Krishna's foster father Nand Baba, and Gokul is where baby Krishna was taken for safety. Each makes an easy half day from Mathura.

Mathura Vrindavan travel FAQs
How many days are enough for Mathura and Vrindavan?
Two days are enough for the main temples of Mathura and Vrindavan. Add a third day for the Govardhan parikrama, Barsana and Nandgaon, or a fourth if you'd like to include Agra.
What are the darshan timings at Banke Bihari temple?
Banke Bihari opens for morning and evening darshan, with a break in the afternoon. Timings shift between summer and winter and change on festivals, so we confirm the current schedule before your visit and plan your day around it.
When is Holi celebrated in Mathura Vrindavan?
Braj celebrations begin about a week before Holi. Lathmar Holi takes place in Barsana and then Nandgaon a few days before the main festival, followed by flower Holi in Vrindavan and colour Holi across the region. Dates follow the Hindu calendar, usually in late February or March.
Is Mathura Vrindavan suitable for elderly parents?
Yes, with good planning. We choose stays close to the main temples, arrange e-rickshaws for the narrow lanes, avoid peak crowd hours and keep the pace gentle. Wheelchair access varies by temple, so let us know in advance and we'll plan around it.
Can I combine Mathura Vrindavan with Agra or Delhi?
Easily. Mathura is about an hour from Agra and around three hours from Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway. Many travellers do a Delhi–Agra–Mathura–Vrindavan circuit over four or five days.
